19th C. Antique English Chester Castle Gold Framed Green Mat Black White Etching

31P

$420.00 /Item

This finely composed Georgian etching by George Cuit (British, 1779–c.1840), is titled Doorway in the Nun’s Garden with the Grand Entrance to the Castle at Chester, was completed in 1827 and is in its original frame, showcasing the artist’s mastery in architectural and landscape etchings, expressing all traits of romanticism.
Rendered with remarkable delicacy, the scene balances romantic ruin with classical symmetry. A broken Gothic arch—overgrown with foliage and framing a contemplative figure—anchors the foreground, while the stately neoclassical façade of Chester Castle appears beyond, establishing a dialogue between nature and built grandeur. The careful use of light and shadow gives depth and texture to the etching, inviting the viewer into a space both real and imagined.
Cuit, was known for his topographical road maps and etchings of historic British architecture, and his sensitive and precise depictions. This print is a particularly evocative example of his work, blending historical interest with aesthetic refinement.
